Frequently Asked Questions
Find Answers to Common Questions About Pipe Inspection Cameras
General Questions
Sewer cameras can typically reach depths of 20m to 300m depending on the model. Cable length determines how far into a pipe you can inspect. The camera can work at any depth as long as the cable reaches. For residential use, 30-50m is usually sufficient. For municipal or industrial applications, 100m-300m cables are available.
For a 2-inch pipe, we recommend a 9mm or 7mm camera. Both sizes will fit easily and provide good visibility. The 7mm is better for very tight spaces, while the 9mm offers slightly brighter LED lighting. Larger cameras like 23mm are better suited for pipes 4 inches and above.
Standard cameras show whatever orientation the cable is twisted in, resulting in upside-down or rotated images. Self-leveling cameras use gyroscope technology to automatically rotate the image display so it always appears upright, making inspections much easier and more intuitive.
Technical Questions
A sewer camera with locator contains a 512Hz sonde transmitter in the camera head. This emits a radio signal that penetrates soil and concrete. A separate locator device held above ground detects this signal, displaying depth and directional guidance to pinpoint the camera's exact underground position.
Self-leveling technology uses a gyroscope sensor to detect the camera head's orientation. The system automatically rotates the video image so it always displays upright on the monitor, regardless of how the cable is twisted inside the pipe. This makes inspections much more intuitive and reduces eye strain.
Yes, a 7mm camera head easily fits into a 1-inch (25mm) pipe with room to spare. There's ample clearance for water flow during inspection, making the 7mm model ideal for tight residential drain lines, HVAC ducts, and automotive applications.
Push cameras (like most sewer cameras) rely on manual pushing of the flexible cable through the pipe. Crawler robots have wheels or tracks that propel themselves through larger pipes (typically 6 inches and above). Crawlers can navigate around obstacles and cover longer distances more efficiently.
IP68 is the highest dust and water protection rating. The first digit (6) means complete dust protection. The second digit (8) means the device can be submerged in water beyond 1 meter for extended periods. This is essential for sewer and drain cameras that operate in wet, muddy environments.
Maintenance & Care
To maintain your pipe inspection camera: 1) Rinse the camera head and cable with clean water after each use. 2) Check and clean the lens regularly. 3) Inspect cables for damage or wear. 4) Store in a dry, temperature-controlled environment. 5) Calibrate sensors periodically. 6) Keep connectors clean and dry.
For self-leveling cameras, calibration should be done monthly or after 50+ hours of use. Check your manufacturer's guidelines. Calibration ensures the gyroscope accurately maintains upright image orientation. Most systems have a built-in calibration mode accessible through the menu.
Purchasing Questions
For typical residential drain inspections, 30m-50m is usually sufficient. Most home drain lines are under 30m from entry point to main connection. If you need to inspect longer runs or multiple rooms, consider 50m. Commercial or municipal use typically requires 100m or more.
720P is adequate for basic inspections and smaller pipes. 1080P (Full HD) provides excellent detail for most professional use and is our recommended minimum. 4K is ideal for large pipes where you need to see fine details at distance, or when creating documentation footage.
